As you sleep
My Day begins
On a stormy night
When the gales are high
And the waves are higher
I am always there
To make you aware
Of the dangers here
Lighthouses are unique and an essential piece of engineering across the world, which has made many a sailing ship see another day. The man and the machine work in tandem yet are alone. They are awake when the world is asleep.
This picture was taken six years ago, at Malpe(13.3795°N 74.6730°E) in the southern state of Karnataka. It was also my first opportunity to get inside a lighthouse. Climbing to the top is an arduous task. But when you reach the top, it is akin to conquering the Mount Everest.
Standing alone through many a thunderous night, this night watchman (like his brothers all over the world) has played an important role. For which, every sailor and every ship passing by will bow in salute.
